NEW ORLEANS – September 21, 2016 – Each year, Tales of the Cocktail® hands out the Golden Spirit Award to the presenter who received the highest evaluation scores from seminar attendees. Through this award, Tales of the Cocktail recognizes this individual for the outstanding talent shown for advancing the craft of the cocktail by sharing his or her knowledge with the industry. Tales of the Cocktail is proud to announce that Dave Broom is this year’s Golden Spirit Award Winner with his seminars “Three Scotch Blends”, “Talking Rot: Rancio, Scotch and MADness” and finally “MMA2: The Rematch”. He was also a panelist on “A Spirited Salon: Conversations with 6 Legendary Authors” alongside Wayne Curtis and Philip Greene, and “The Ultimate Lagavulin Seminar” with Ewan Morgan. Dave Broom will receive a custom Golden Spirit Award provided by Royer Corporation, the world's leading manufacturer of customized swizzle sticks, beverage stirrers & cocktail picks.

“In our inaugural year as the Official Sponsor of the Golden Spirit Award, we are excited to present this year’s honor to Dave Broom! Dave will receive a fully customized 5-liter oak barrel trophy to commemorate the occasion. The Royer Corporation team looks forward to honoring future Golden Spirit Award winners for years to come!” said Tom Seaver, Director of Marketing for Royer Corporation.

While this is Broom’s first Golden Spirit Award, he is veteran Tales presenter. Over the past five years, Broom has shared his talents and knowledge with Tales of the Cocktail attendees as a seminar presenter with well-received seminars: “Eastern Eden” (2011), “Cognac: The Barkeep’s Forgotten Friend” with Tristan Stephenson (2012), “Worm Tub Tales: Deep Diving into Malt” and “White Lyan’s Usquebaugh Tales” with Ryan Chetiyawardana (2014), and “For Peat’s Sake! (A Study of Smoke)” (2015).

“Dave Broom has the rare gift of being able to hold forth genially, and casually from a bar stool, or seriously and intellectually from a podium facing hundreds,” said Philip Duff, Director of Education for Tales of the Cocktail. “Dave’s writing background spans every type of spirit, but his vast knowledge and infectious passion roams far beyond stills and shakers. He effortlessly weaves narrative that puts the spirit under discussion in a context of history, place, and people. We feel privileged that Dave teaches seminars at Tales each year. We hope he will long continue to do so, and I am delighted to congratulate the first-ever Glaswegian recipient of the Golden Spirit Award!”

Broom, an award-winning author, won the coveted Spirited Awards for Best Cocktail & Spirits Writer and Best New Spirits Book for Whisky: The Manual in 2015. In addition to Whisky: The Manual, Broom has written several other cocktail books including the World Atlas of Whisky, Gin: The Manual and The Complete Bartender’s Guide to name a few.

“I am over the moon with this news. Thanks to the panel for having faith in a topic, which must have seemed pretty arcane,” said Broom. “What we wanted to do – for this was a collaborative effort – was extend and deepen people’s understanding of flavor within Scotch whisky. We wanted to establish new and, perhaps, unlikely links between whisky making, blending, and cutting-edge food science, showing how it could be applied practically and philosophically to modern bartending. We also wanted to make people smile! It might have seemed heretical to pour hugely expensive blended Scotch into giant orange buckets, but this award shows that people seemed to get it.”

Broom joins an esteemed group of Golden Spirit Award winners including Charlotte Voisey (2007 & 2009), Jeff Berry (2008), Francesco Lafranconi (2009), Jacob Briars (2010), Claire Smith (2011), Philip Duff (2012), David Wondrich (2013), Angus Winchester (2014) and Ian McLaren (2015).
