Bartenders Across the World Celebrate International Day of Peace

Thanks to a cocktail Instagrammer, an international group of bartenders banded together to spread the message of peace through their drinks.

We teased on Wednesday to follow your favorite cocktail Instagram accounts because something big was about to happen. Matt Hollidge, aka @theamateurmixologist on Instagram, had planned something special amongst the global drinkstagram community. He began by reaching out to more than 100 cocktail media accounts on Instagram with this somewhat mysterious message:

"September 21 is World Peace Day; advocating peace and encouraging people to take specific actions that reduce violence and conflict under the theme: who will you make peace with? This year, I'm encouraging the global drinkstagram community to adopt the day under #peacepours.

The challenge is to make a drink that, by its ingredients or style embodies and encourages the idea of peace. You might choose to balance two ingredients that are never put together or pair spirits from nations that are in conflict with each other. However you fulfil the brief, creatively, figuratively or politically; enjoy mixing that peace punch, truce juice or ceasefire sipper.

Please don't publicly post or story anything about it until September 21, but please do share this privately with as many drinkstagrammers as you want. I like the idea of the global community surprising Instagramland on that day with unexpected drinks that inspire peace in some way.

Just mention the idea/inspiration in some way and use the hashtag #peacepours. And if you want, some of the other Peace Day tags: #PeaceDay #21Sept #WorldPeaceDay #internationaldayofpeace."

'UK & Ireland Iced Tea' Today is the @unitednations International Day of Peace, encouraging global acts of peace, political and personal; I'm joining others from the global drinkstagram community to adopt the day & inspire peace under the hashtag: #peacepours . The drink is a variation on the 'Long Island Iced Tea' which contains 5 base spirits. Mine come from 5 different countries: England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales & the Republic of Ireland. . Since the UK voted to leave the EU last year, we've seen divisions propagated by both sides of the debate. One of the more complex issues of Brexiting is the NI / ROI border. The UK & EU positions on it during negotiations have been laughable (they've actually made fun of each other) which doesn't help anyone who lives on either side especially in the midst of a NI Assembly still in stalemate. . This drink brings the 5 nations together in equal measure to create something that works. No spirit overpowers another but all work together for the greater good. However negotiations continue with Brexit, there is no denying that a relative presence of peace has literally transformed the island of Ireland in the last decade; and this peace is worth standing up for. . Whichever side of the brexit debate or Irish border you find yourself on, may we seek peace & use our voices to encourage our leaders to do the same for the future of the UK & Ireland. . I'll be following the #peacepours hashtag for stories of hope, justice & peace through cocktails today; explore these other amazing drinks & may our lives & world be a little more peaceful for it. Check the link in my profile 👆 for Peace Day info. #peaceoneday --- 15ml @foragersgin #gin (Wales) 15ml @uwa_tequila #tequila (Scotland) 15ml @theduppyshare #rum (England) 15ml @rubybluespirits potato #vodka (N.I) 15ml @teeling_whiskey poitìn #whiskey (R.O.I) 15ml fresh lemon 15ml fresh lime 15ml sugar syrup 30ml @crabbiesuk alcoholic ginger #beer 30ml @drinkdalstons cola Egg white 👉 combine all except mixers, shake with ice and strain. Top with mixers & spoon egg white foam on top. Create the 'Emerald Isle' using individual cress stalks & the border line using Peychauds bitters

So, here’s round two of my cocktails celebrating #WorldPeaceDay. Taking my friend Matt of @theamateurmixologist’s lead and creating a peace-themed cocktail, I present to you, the “Flower Power.” 🌷 To me, flowers embody friendship, openness, and love. Faith, one of the owners of @smallpotatoesfarmbakery, graciously let me drop by the farm earlier today, while they were technically closed, to pick up some edible flowers for this drink. 🌷 Almost every ingredient in this cocktail is made with FLOWERS: elderflowers, violets, roses, lavender, and peonies. It’s floral without tasting soapy or like your great grandmother’s perfume. It’s balanced and dry on the finish. 🌷 The best part about this recipe is that it yields two cocktails. One to enjoy and one to share. You can always bring someone flowers, but why not make them a cocktail, instead? 😏 Happiest of #internationaldayofpeace to you all and CHEERS to all of the others making celebratory cocktails for #peacepours today. . . . • 3 ounces @jackrabbithillfarm CapRock lavender gin • 1 ounce @peonyvodka • 1/2 ounce crème de violette {I used @leespiritsco • 1 bar-spoon elderflower liqueur {I used @stgermaindrinks} • 1/2 ounce freshly squeezed lemon juice • 1/4 @lillet1872 rosé • spritz of rosewater • edible flowers, for garnish {I used @smallpotatoesfarmbakery’s beauties} . . . 1. In a mixing tin, combine the gin, vodka, crème de violette, elderflower liqueur, lemon juice, and Lillet Rosé. 2. Add ice, shake, and strain into a chilled coupe. 3. Spritz with rosewater and garnish with edible flowers. . . . #cocktails #feedfeed @thefeedfeed @thefeedfeed.cocktails #foodblogfeed #abmhappyhour #f52grams #thekitchn #sommlife #drinkstagram #imbibegram #tastybev #happyhourclub #foodblogfeed #saveurmag #craftcocktails #thirsty #liqpic #hollyandflora #dailycocktail #eattheworld #paonia #westslopebestslope #cratestyle

"You catch more with honey than with vinegar...." . Here on Instagram, I've been invited by @theamateurmixologist to commemorate World Peace Day with the hashtag #peacepours and a drink incorporating conflict and resolution. As the aforementioned day is the first day of Rosh Hashanah, and I wouldn't otherwise  be posting from now til next Sunday, I asked permission to post a bit earlier with an explanation as to why and still be able to participate. Matt, who leads this initiative, graciously agreed. My contribution contains traditional flavors from the Jewish holiday, where we eat apples & honey to wish for a sweet new year ahead, as well as the two ingredients from the old adage about catching flies. May we all work to charm in order to disarm, use our words and creativity to promote understanding, and continue to celebrate in style into the new year. . From my extended family to yours, Shanah Tovah, Shabbat Shalom and have a good weekend in advance, and may we all have tall drinks and cool heads in the year to come. Cheers! . Pictured: Honey whisky, apple cider vinegar, dry vermouth, #vernors ginger soda.

This #PeacePours contribution has only one ingredient. For some of us it's something that just comes out of the faucet. For others, it's a 15 mile walk, everyday. And with climate change, it's the number one future source of human conflict. The UN Right to Water act of 2010 recognizes clean drinking water and sanitation as essential to the realization of all human rights. So, next time you have a drink in a bar, show some respect for that sidecar glass of water. It's the most powerful dipole around – capable of starting wars, but if shared justly, also capable of putting them out. As the saying goes: "If you don't share your wealth with the poor, they will share their poverty with you." Thank you, @theamateurmixologist for the initiative.

Soñador Americano⠀ ⠀ Today is @unitednations International Day of Peace and I am thrilled to take part in the #peacepours campaign, initiated by @theamateurmixologist Matt. #peaceoneday⠀ ⠀ This year, the International Day of Peace focuses on engaging and mobilizing people throughout the world to show support for refugees and migrants.⠀ ⠀ This is of particular interest to me, as my hometown – and where I distill and bartend – is Dodge City, Kansas. Dodge City is what they call a “minority-majority” city. That means that non-Hispanic whites (like myself) make up less than 50% of the population of said area. ⠀ ⠀ Because so many within our community are Hispanic immigrants, we’ve closely watched the DACA debates happening on the national level. ⠀ ⠀ This is further underlined with Dodge City’s history, as we are inexorably tied with our neighbors to the south with our connection to the railroads, cattle drives, and our proximity to the former Mexican territory. ⠀ ⠀ As such, I wanted to combine some traditional American and Mexican beverages to show that combining together results in something that is beautiful and wholly unique. ⠀ ⠀ *⠀ ⠀ Soñador Americano⠀ ⠀ 60 ML @bhdistillery Red Eye Whiskey⠀ 90 ML agua de guayaba (guava water)⠀ 15 ML @casadaristi Xtabentun Honey/Anise Liqueur⠀ 2 Dashes @Doctor__Adams Boker’s Bitters⠀ ⠀ Combine the whiskey, agua de guayaba, and xtabentun in a cocktail shaker filled three large ice cubes. Shake thoroughly to create a nice froth and then strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Add two dashes of Boker's Bitters and draw an olive branch (better than me, hopefully) in the foam and serve.⠀ ⠀ #whiskey #21Sept #bartender #booze #cocktail #cocktails #cocktailtime #craftcocktails #drink #drinks #drinkstagram #happyhour #instadrink #internationaldayofpeace #mixologist #mixology #PeaceDay #thirsty #WorldPeaceDay #bartender #happyhour #fashion #photooftheday #craftcocktails #craftcocktail #drinkporn #imbibegram #craftspirits

Today is #worldpeaceday. To make the occasion, my insta-buddy @theamateurmixologist rallied together a bunch of us drinkstagrammers to create unique cocktails that celebrate this idea of peace using the hashtag #peacepours. . I call this marvellous creation Passion Peace Punch. New Zealand, my home country, is the most free country in the world so it made sense for me to use two NZ spirits as the base to this epic punch bowl. . I think so many problems in the world could be solved if we sat down with the people we disagreed with and engaged in open minded discussion over a good meal or a good drink and really considered their point of view. . So grab some friends or friends to be and enjoy this delicious group cocktail. Make sure to toast to world peace. . PASSION PEACE PUNCH ◾4 oz @42below feijoa vodka ◾4 oz @thisisstolen dark rum ◾2 oz @chambordchannel ◾2 oz passion fruit simple syrup ◾2 oz lime juice ◾4 oz pineapple juice ◾2 oz mango nectar/juice . Half fill your punch bowl with ice and throw in a bunch of chopped fruit. I've used pineapple, strawberry and lemon as well as pomegranate ice cubes. Pour in all your ingredients and give it a good stir to combine. Bang a few straws in there and garnish with a nice big sprig of mint. . 📸 : @victoria.makes . PEACE

Happy International Day of Peace! Our friend Matt @theamateurmixologist has rallied the IG community to create cocktails that encourage the idea of peace. Check out all the amazing posts and recipes from around the world at #peacepours 🌎 . Our cocktail, "Paper Crane", is a riff on the Paper Plane and in memory of a tragic story from World War II, which we find highly relevant today. . Sadako Sasaki was two years old when the US dropped a nuclear bomb on Hiroshima in 1945, a mile from her house. She was fortunately not injured in the blast and lived a relatively normal childhood. But by age 12, she had developed leukemia from the bomb's radiation exposure. . She was hospitalized and given a year to live. Her best friend came to visit and gave her a golden square of paper to fold into a paper crane, telling her about the legend of Senbazuru. . Japanese legend Senbazuru says that anyone who folds 1000 paper cranes will be granted one wish. ⭐️ . The story goes that Sadako had trouble finding enough paper to fold all 1000 paper cranes. She used anything she could find: scraps, stamps, medical papers ... anything. But she didn't make it. She folded 644 paper cranes before she passed and, after her death, her friends folded the remaining 356 cranes in her memory. ❤️ . With the threat of nuclear war all over the news, we feel it's important to remember the story of Sadako Sasaki and the effects of war on innocent people. . Here is our effort towards Sadako's 1000 paper cranes. . Paper Crane by @tippleandnosh 1 oz Nikka Taketsuru Whisky 1 oz Amaro Nonino 1 oz Yuzu liqueur 3/4 oz Fresh lemon juice . "It is a beautiful day" proclaimed Georges Clemenceau just after the signing of the Treaty of Versailles at the end of World War I. Europe, devastated, was still hopeful for a peaceful future and existence. In the same treaty the French forbade other countries from using the Cognac designation on brandy produced out side of the specific region in France. In honor of the International Day of Peace I'm reminded that while we're far from it, the world still strives for a more peaceful path despite our many differences. The signatories of this peace treaty believed this was possible. Cherry Treaty 1oz Pierre Ferrand 1840 cognac (France) 1/2oz Asbach Uralt brandy (Germany) 1/2oz Copper & Kings Brandy (USA) 1/4oz Amaro Nonino (Italy) 1/4oz Aromatic cherry syrup 2dsh Titze Crow's Nest Barrel Aged Cherry bitters Stir w ice until sufficiently chilled, strain into cocktail glass. Garnish w sword pick full of cherries.

Today is World Peace Day and we are honored to take part in the #peacepours campaign, initiated by @theamateurmixologist Matt. (Check out his feed for some truly inspirational posts).⠀ ⠀ We recently bought some vintage 1950s cocktail swords by Spanish manufacturer Toledo. They used to make the "real deal" but later started making these more decorative replica pieces. They are fully metal, painted in the most delicate way and simply the perfect example that you could abandon the thought of war and focus your creativity on something more fruitful (and fun). ⠀ ⠀ And then there is the cocktail itself. We wanted to make a cocktail with the word "peace" in its name, but there are surprisingly few out there. Luckily we found the Peacefield, by restaurant Townshend, in Frederic Yarm's book Drunk & Told:⠀ ⠀ 1 oz light rum⠀ 0,75 oz pineapple juice⠀ 0,5 oz green Chartreuse⠀ 0,5 oz lime juice⠀ 0,25 oz simple syrup⠀ Shake with fresh ice, strain into a glass and fill up with crushed ice.⠀ ⠀ What's really interesting in this cocktail is the unusual combination of pineapple juice and Chartreuse. Mixed together they create a bitter, almost amaro-like impression that is hard to describe in words. To us this is just another metaphor of how different characteristics doesn't have to be a hurdle, but can rather create something fantastic when united.⠀ ⠀ Do celebrate World Peace Day 2017!⠀ ⠀ #21Sept #bartender #booze #cocktail #cocktails #cocktailtime #coctel #craftcocktails #drink #drinks #drinkstagram @fredericyarm #happyhour #instadrink #internationaldayofpeace #mixologist #mixology #PeaceDay #thirsty #WorldPeaceDay #коктейль #칵테일

Today is @Unitednations International day of peace. Huge shout out to my brother by "Passion For The Craft" Matt @theamateurmixologist for this amazing idea. I grew up in Toco, a small sleeping community on the North Eastern end of Trinidad. My home consisted of my six siblings, my four cousins and I. We were all different: in skin color, age, height, the way we think and much more. Despite these differences we were all loved equally, thank you (Mom and Dad) we were given God's grace which allowed us the opportunity to rise out of our bed each morning to witness the rising of the Sun and be able to smell the fresh ocean breeze. The question is are we really different? And even if we are, what is the recipe that kept us all together? 1. Willpower/Determination/Spirit 2. Sacrifices 3. Love/Passion 4. Forgiveness Inspiration: International day of peace Name: Mistress Hibiscus Ingredients Angostura 1919 rum, Falernum, Hibiscus cordial, Passion fruit, lime, ANGOSTURA® aromatic bitters. Let's be our brothers'and sisters' keeper. Let's come together as one as we celebrate International Day of Peace salute!! #angosturamixologist #peacepours
