Patrón Tequila’s Master Distiller and Blender
What really matters is the quality in the bottle, and nobody at Patrón Spirits knows this better than the person responsible for creating the recipe for the world’s finest ultra- premium tequila – Patrón’s master distiller Francisco Alcaraz.
Born in the small southern Jalisco town of Tamazula de Gordiano and educated at the University Guadalajara (with a degree in chemical engineering), Francisco has spent his entire career in the tequila industry. He started as a tequila inspector in 1968 working for the Industry and Commerce Department in Mexico, which then led to a position as a production manager at a tequila distillery in the town of Atotonilco in the highlands of Jalisco (the present day home of Patrón) where he worked closely with the distillery’s owner (a former university professor of his) to master fermentation and distillation techniques. He then applied his expertise to teaching others, becoming a consultant to some of the best-known tequila producers in the region, and the head of the industrial fermentation department at a technical university in Zapopan, Jalisco.
Then in 1989, he made the first batch of what was to become his proudest achievement – Patrón tequila. That year, long before the ultra-premium tequila category even existed, Francisco was introduced to two American entrepreneurs, Martin Crowley and John Paul DeJoria, who were following their passion for high- quality tequila and had found their way to Atotonilco and to Francisco. The two business partners, with the blend that Francisco perfected, produced 1,000 cases of Patrón tequila that year, and though today he’s now overseeing far more volume than that, Francisco still personally tastes and approves every batch that leaves the distillery.
Francisco’s accomplishments at Patrón also include the recipe and development of Patrón’s flagship products, Gran Patrón Burdeos and Gran Patrón Platinum tequila, as well as Patrón XO Cafe (coffee liqueur) and Patrón Citrónge (orange liqueur). Always the innovator, Francisco continues to spend countless hours blending and tasting recipes that may find their way into the Patrón portfolio one day.
