Tales of the Cocktail® 2013 Cocktail Apprentice Program Applications Now Available 

Cointreau® Welcomes Apprentices for the Sixth Consecutive Year 


NEW ORLEANS – FEBRUARY 19, 2013 – Cointreau, the iconic French orange liqueur established in 1849, once again proudly partners with Tales of the Cocktail® for the annual Cocktail Apprentice Program (CAP). Sixty of the world’s best up-and-coming bartenders will be selected to work closely with the leading names in mixology during the five-day festival of cocktails, cuisine and culture held in New Orleans from July 17-21st.

“There’s nothing more exciting than having the opportunity to foster relationships with yet another class of the Cocktail Apprentice Program,” said Paul G. Tuennerman, Co-Owner, Tales of the Cocktail.

The Cocktail Apprentice Team is selected on cocktail recipe submissions, as well as their answers to questions relating to their experience in the industry. The program, initially developed to give talented bartenders the chance to learn from veterans of the industry, is made up of a diverse group of individuals to include experienced bartenders, as well as bartenders new to the creative mixologist world.  The program gives innovative bartenders the opportunity to develop and perfect their skills.

Since the start of the Cocktail Apprentice Program, hundreds of promising bartenders have had the opportunity to polish their craft at Tales of the Cocktail®. Bartenders also get the chance to work on large-scale events, which they may not have the opportunity to do normally. The team is essential to the success of seminars and tasting rooms, working behind the scenes to create flawless events with succulent cocktails.

“Just like Tales of the Cocktail, the cocktail apprentice program is always evolving to meet the needs of today’s bartender. In 2013 we are proud to offer the CAP finishing school which gives seniors apprentices the opportunity to participate in educational classes at Tales of the Cocktail in topics such as public speaking and finance to broaden their talent,” said Don Lee, Cocktail Apprentice Team Leader.

The Selection Process:

The cocktail apprentice leadership team uses a multi-stage review process based on a point system to select the program finalists. The first several rounds are conducted blind, awarding points based solely on essay responses. Applicant names and any recommendations are not considerations for this part of the process. Those who move on to the second round are then awarded more points based on event experience. For the third step of the review the leaders remove their blinders and give weight to other factors in order to create a staff balanced between regions and levels of experience.


Deadlines for applications are March 15, 2013 for returning CAPs and April 1, 2013 for new CAPs.

In addition to the sought after experience the CAP provides, participants are eligible to apply for the Cocktail Apprentice Scholarship Program. In 2013, the scholarship program that will allow 10 former apprentices to complete the prestigious Beverage Alcohol Resource (B.A.R.) Program. These ten recipients will receive a scholarship valued at $3,800 and a $500 travel stipend to attend the 11th B.A.R. five-day Spirits & Mixology Certification Program, happening at New York’s Astor Center on September 23-27, 2013. In addition, Tales of the Cocktail® will have an additional $10,000 in funding for those who want to attend and further their education through the program.

In addition, past Cocktail Apprentices will have the opportunity to apply for the Cocktail Apprentice Medical Aid Fund.  This fund provides financial assistance in the form of cash grants to former Tales of the Cocktail® Apprentices to help off-set large medical expenses in times of need. With the burden of medical bill payments lessened or removed, they can focus on getting healthy and back behind the bar to continue shaking up the cocktail industry.
