Philip Duff wins the 2012 Golden Spirit Award from Tales of the Cocktail®

Duff’s seminars on curacao and the business behind bars were the highest rated seminars at Tales of the Cocktail® 2012.

NEW ORLEANS – October 5, 2012 – Each year, Tales of the Cocktail® awards the “Golden Spirit Award” to the presenter who received the highest evaluation scores from seminar attendees. Through this award, Tales of the Cocktail® recognizes this individual for the outstanding talent shown for advancing the craft of the cocktail by sharing his or her knowledge with the cocktail industry. Tales of the Cocktail® is proud to announce that Philip Duff is this year’s Golden Spirit Award Winner.

“Philip’s passion for and knowledge of spirits, along with his good sense of humor and boundless charisma, make him one of the best presenters we know as well as a great resource for anything spirits-related,” said Alexandre Gabriel, President of Cognac Ferrand. “I have worked with Philip on presentations for our Pierre Ferrand Dry Curacao, Plantation Rum and Pierre Ferrand Cognac. Philip was both a real pro and great fun to work with. We are very happy for Philip and believe wholeheartedly that he deserves this honor.”

In Philip’s seminar, Curacao: The Ultimate Guide To The World’s Favorite Liqueur Flavour, David Wondrich and Alexandre Gabriel discussed the history and evolution of curaçao (orange) as a cocktail ingredient. This included the birth of brands and the switch from multi-flavor event liqueurs of Middle Ages Netherlands to single-ingredient cocktail liqueurs. The seminar also gave a unique chance to see exactly how curaçao is made and why.

Drawing on his experience of training over 17,000 people in 60 countries through his company, Liquid Solutions, Philip partnered with Dushan Zaric in developing the first accreditation program at Tales of the Cocktail® with From Cocktail Napkin to Cocktail Bar: How To Open Your Own Bar, a three-part series that dove deep into the business of making drinks. This three-part series doves deep into every aspect of opening and running a successful bar business, from developing your concept to finding locations to marketing your bar. Those that completed the series received official certification from Tales of the Cocktail® and BarSmarts and the knowledge they need to make their dream bar a reality.

“Philip Duff is the most knowledgeable, most relevant, and most likable man in the spirits business today,” said Suzanne Freedman, Director, On Premise of Pernod Ricard USA. “He harbors an enormous amount of knowledge in every aspect of the industry, and there isn’t a project that you don’t want to work with him on. This award is well deserved, and it’s an honor to call him a colleague and friend.”

As if moderating seminars wasn’t enough, Phillip also served as a panelist for three additional seminars, The Art of Spirits Blending with Miguel Cedeño Cruz, Audrey Fort, and Jean-Sebastien Robicquet of Excellia Tequila, Tangled Up in Blue with Sebastian Reaburn and Jacob Briars; and The Name Game with Angus Winchester.

“A well-deserved accolade for Philip, a long-time participant and supporter of Tales of the Cocktail,” said Paul G. Tuennerman, co-founder of Tales of the Cocktail®.
